Our Events
Date: Saturday, October 26, 2019 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Venue: The Sullivan Senior Center, 88 East Albert Street, Torrington, CT

Amanda Brill, LCSW, from the Chase Family Movement Disorders Center of Hartford Healthcare will speak about cognitive behavioral therapy.

"Mental health is extremely important in PD. Although common in other chronic diseases, research suggests that depression and anxiety are even more common in PD. It is estimated that at least 50 percent of those diagnosed with PD will experience some form of depression during their illness, and up to 40 percent will experience an anxiety disorder (Parkinson's Foundation).

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a skills-based, non-pharmacological treatment that teaches practical strategies to help people living with Parkinson's and their family members more effectively navigate the challenges of living with Parkinson's. It is a kind of psychotherapy or "talk therapy" that focuses on examining the connections between thoughts, feelings and behaviors, in order to provide individuals with the skills needed to change thinking patters (e.g., negative thoughts about self, world and future) and behaviors (e.g., procrastination, social isolation and withdrawal, lack of structure in the day) that may be related to uncomfortable feelings like depression or anxiety. CBT is tailored to each person's unique goals and people are encouraged to practice their newly acquired coping skills between sessions in order to work toward their goals." (Information from Davis Phinney, page 186 of the Every Victory Counts manual and from the Parkinson's Foundation website)

Monthly meetings include a speaker, a caregiver support session and a Parkinson's exercise session.  All are welcome to attend.
