Our group mourns the passing of Muff Maskovsky whose article from the Register is excerpted below.  Muff was with our group for a few years as he transitioned from home to Emeritus before moving to Massachusetts last year to be closer to his children.

Muff was a long-time educator in Torrington as a high school teacher and principal, assistant superintendent and interim superintendent before moving on to Region 6 as superintendent.  His determination, diplomacy and foresight created a legacy that includes the Warner Theater and Torrington's UCONN branch.  He was a community activist who helped to make Torrington a strong, caring town where children could grow in an enriching environment.
Please keep Muff's family in your prayers.

muff2TORRINGTON >> Marvin “Muff” Maskovsky died last week, leaving behind an entire city that has benefitted from his hard work and dedication multiple times over.Maskovsky is remembered as a lover of education. He worked as a teacher for Torrington High School before becoming the school’s principal. He then became the superintendent of the Region 1 school district.  Additionally, Maskovsky is credited with making great strides in keeping the UConn Torrington campus open in the 1970s when UConn’s board of trustees made several attempts to close the local campus due to budget constraints. Maskovsky also took on another activist role in 1980 when he began a crusade to stop the razing of the Warner Theatre.  With the help of many others, Maskovsky worked around the clock to turn the old movie theater into a center for performing arts that would also provide education and cultural enrichment to the area.

Warner Theatre Board of Directors Chairman Brian Mattiello said it was impossible to know “Muff” and not be moved by his spirit.  “I go into this with a sense of loss, but also a strong sense of celebration and count myself fortunate to have spent time with him and have learned from him,” said Mattiello.
To honor the decades of service to both the Torrington community and the Warner, the Theatre had its Arts Annex rededicated in Maskovsky’s name in 2013.
“Muff” was predeceased by his wife, Jacquie Gentile Maskovsky, who died in 2008.Maskovsky and his wife are reported to be born in the same hospital on the same day, Sept. 29, 1930, and shared hospital room as newborns.

“It was like they were a meant to be couple,” said Mattiello, who said he spent considerable time with the couple outside of work. “He leaves a legacy that is not only apparent today, but generations to come will know of his contributions to the city.”
